Estrella history

Alingsås comforter Jonas Alströmer synonymous with potato eating in Sweden . In 1724 he introduced the potato in Sweden , and many would say that the rest is - history.

We at Estrella agree - it's a great story . With our eyes , the extra fun to read because we have the chance to be involved in it as often .

How it started ...

The year is 1946 and Folke Andersson has decided to start importing fruit to Sweden. Folke has its roots in Alingsås (just like Alströmer ) but has for some time been living in South America in the city of Guayaquil in Ecuador. He decides to call his new company Estrella, after of Spanish "star" . He begins to import bananas and becomes known as the "Banana King" .

Fast forward the tape eleven, and lands in the year 1957. Folke 's fine . His company is by now well established , and his plantations in South America has grown into a small empire. Back in Sweden , he has even been nicknamed "Banana King" . Folke can finally begin to indulge in a little luxury, and decides to take a trip to New York in the United States with his friend ( and also CEO of Estrella ) Arne Bergenhag . One of the many items on the schedule is going to Madison Square Garden and watch boxing.

USA 's food culture differs greatly from Sweden at this time , and the loud shouting snack vendors in the stands at an American sports arena is a new experience for the two Swedes . They buy a package "potato chips" potato slices fried in oil and then salted . What a match it was like Folke and Arne looked at no one remembers , but their decision after tasting snacks from the USA learns no forget. The decision was that Estrella would start making and selling them in Sweden .

And the rest is - history, too.

1946
Estrella registered as a trademark by Folke Andersson. The Company is engaged in the beginning only the import of fruit from South America.

1957
Estrella begins to produce snacks in Alingsås and the Swedes must first become acquainted with potato chips.

1963
The company has outgrown its premises and the decision to make the short move from Alingsås to Kortedala in Gothenburg taken.

1965
Marabou / The Pet Milk Co. buys Estrella and a period of strong expansion begins.

1983
The company moved to what is now its home; the newly built and ultramodern chip factory in Angered outside Gothenburg.

1988
The year when we were the first to launch Sourcream & Onion chips on the Swedish market , and we started selling our products in Finland.

1990
A Nordic snack group is formed , which, besides Estrella in Sweden consists of Estrella in Finland, Taffel in Denmark and Maarud in Norway.

1993
Group bought by U.S. food giant Kraft Foods .

2008
Estrella, Maarud and Taffel bought by Norwegian investment company Hercules A / S. Thus, Estrella, Maarud and Taffel again independent players in the market.
